92 hours to order first killing spree…. oh Obama.

It was with great sadness that I read that new USA President Barrack Obama took only 92 hours to order the first missile strike of his presidency:-

Sad so Sad

Sad so Sad

92 Approves first American missile strikes under his presidency on tribal areas of Pakistan.”
From Obama – the first 100 hours – The Guardian Saturday 24 January 2009

In another article, President orders air strikes on villages in tribal area,The Guardian tells us that 18 people died in the missile strike (the figure is 22 according to the Sunday Times):-

Barack Obama gave the go-ahead for his first military action yesterday, missile strikes against suspected militants in Pakistan which killed at least 18 people.

Four days after assuming the presidency, he was consulted by US commanders before they launched the two attacks. Although Obama has abandoned many of the “war on terror” policies of George Bush while he was president, he is not retreating from the hunt for Osama bin Laden and other al-Qaida leaders.

The US believes they are hiding in the tribal areas along the border with Afghanistan, and made 30 strikes last year in which more than 200 people were killed. In the election, Obama hinted at increased operations in Pakistan, saying he thought Bush had made a mistake in switching to Iraq before completing the job against al-Qaida in Afghanistan and Pakistan.

So…. the first blow is struck against the promise of Obama…. the first blood stain on his Presidency.

I’m sure the American generals made a good case in the comfort of their upholstered armchairs in the war room of the White House for using $200,000 missiles to blow up a few more mud huts and to kill a few more “terrorists” but Obama… Obama… I expected more from you. I thought you might at least call a halt to such actions until you at least were sure these war mongers have terrorist targets this time.

Now.. your hands are personally red with the blood of a few mud hut villagers. A too swift end to the innocent view that you are a different breed of politician.
SAD… so… SAD….

White House no comment on suspect Pakistan strikes

WASHINGTON (AFP) — The White House Friday refused to comment on Pakistani reports that suspected US drones had fired missiles into presumed militant dens in the northwest tribal belt.

“As you know I am not going to comment on those matters,” spokesman Robert Gibbs told reporters despite being repeatedly pressed to discuss the reports.

Pakistani security officials said the missiles fired onto presumed militant dens killed 15 people, including three children and at least four civilians.

The strikes, which pulverised two houses in the northwest tribal belt, were reportedly the first since US President Barack Obama took office and one day after he appointed a brand new special envoy for Afghanistan and Pakistan.

From the Times Online Report of January 23rd: President Obama ‘orders Pakistan drone attacks’:

Missiles fired from suspected US drones killed at least 15 people inside Pakistan today, the first such strikes since Barack Obama became president and a clear sign that the controversial military policy begun by George W Bush has not changed.

Security officials said the strikes, which saw up to five missiles slam into houses in separate villages, killed seven “foreigners” – a term that usually means al-Qaeda – but locals also said that three children lost their lives.

Dozens of similar strikes since August on northwest Pakistan, a hotbed of Taleban and al-Qaeda militancy, have sparked angry government criticism of the US, which is targeting the area with missiles launched from unmanned CIA aircraft controlled from operation rooms inside the US.

The operations were stepped up last year after frustration inside the Bush administration over a perceived failure by Islamabad to stem the flow of Taleban and al-Qaeda fighters from the tribal regions into Afghanistan. Mr Obama has made Afghanistan his top foreign policy priority and said during his presidential campaign that he would consider military action inside Pakistan if the government there was unable or unwilling to take on the militants.

The strikes come just a day after Mr Obama appointed Richard Holbrooke, a former UN ambassador, as a special envoy for the region.

Eight people died when missiles hit a compound near Mir Ali, an al-Qaeda hub in Pakistan’s North Waziristan region. Seven more died when hours later two missiles hit a house in Wana, in South Waziristan. Local officials said the target in Wana was a guest house owned by a pro-Taleban tribesman. One said that as well as three children, the tribesman’s relatives were killed in the blast.

Pakistan has objected to such attacks, saying they are a violation of its territory that undermines its efforts to tackle militants. Since September, the US is estimated to have carried out about 30 such attacks, killing more than 220 people.
