Great news that the UDA (Ulster Volunteer Force) has removed it’s flags from the West Winds estate in Newtownards. In this BBC story – UVF removes its flags from estate – Gary McCready, a community representative is quoted as saying:-
“We decided within the estate to try and move forward, get the estate improved, and move away from the name that it had received. They’ve flown there for years and the police have always wanted them down. People have complained about them, but they’ve never been taken down. They’ve always been left to fly, but this year after talking to the loyalists and speaking to the community we’ve got them down.”
I don’t know the West Winds Estate personally but I applaud their brave first step. Congratulations are in order, I think, to all involved. It can’t have been an easy process.
Now …..who would like to see this trend move across Northern Ireland? Can we get rid of all the flags that have symbolised our conflict and instead find something to celebrate our diversity?
What do you think?
